In the new house we have hardwood floors on 2 floors and then parquet (spelling?) in the family room in the basement. The kitchen and mudroom have laminent so we plan to install new hardwoods in the kitchen.  It’s really hard to match hardwood stain when it’s from the 1960’s since it tends to yellow so I’m planning on spending the money (budget allowing) to have the floors refinished.

The floors are in good shape from what I’ve seen so far and I’m guessing we could get away with not refinishing them BUT it’s so much easier to have them done before you move furniture in the house.  Right now they are an oak color like this….

I could work with this color and in reality when all the bids come in from the contractors we might have to live with them but ideally I’d like to have them done in a Walnut color like this…

The deeper floor color I think makes paint pop more and gives a warmth to the home.  In the kitchen I am still leaning towards white cabinetry and think a walnut floor will show them off.  Here are a few kitchen images to give you a feel for what I am going for.

kitchen 1 kitchen 2 kitchen 3In my 1st house renovation I chose cherry hardwoods and loved them so I won’t 100% rule it out until I get in the house.

In our current house when we renovated my hubby talked me into a really dark stain more like a Jackobean for the floors.  I actually hand mixed the color of the stain so it’s a bit of a mystery about the actual color.  We love them BUT with 4 dogs and 16 paws that show ever spec of dirt I can’t do it again! (Even though I do love dark floors).

Some of you may be reading along and wondering why we aren’t doing tile floors in kitchen.  This is a personal preference I actually love hardwoods in the kitchen maybe it’s because I grew up in an old home with hardwood in the kitchen.  This will be the 3rd home that I have installed hardwood in the kitchen.  I find it hold up perfectly fine and adds an element of warmth and coziness to the kitchen that tile just doesn’t do.

Well that’s it for now….Monday we close on the new house so keep you eyes peeled for a post Monday afternoon/evening hopefully with a video tour of the new house.

The new color would be beautiful and I hope you can get it done. My husband and I refinished our hardwood floors ourselves before we moved in and it was a lot of work. We have a few uumm “harsh” areas but we love it. However, I am now wishing I had done a grey since we have changed our color scheme. But the beauty of the dark floors is that they go with everything and make it all look so good. Good luck!

I’d wondered about how you managed with the dark floors and the dogs. One thing in my house is that the island is has a black stain. Boy, does that show dust and dust bunnies.

    Hope all is going well.

We have the medium walnut colored floors in our home and couldn’t be happier! They hide a magnitude of sins. I have had the super dark floors and they always looked messy!

A darker hardwood floor is gorgeous in a light colored kitchen, so you are making a wonderful choice. I think a walnut floor will look great in the kitchen if you still use white cabinetry. Thanks for the wonderful post about your design ideas for your home.

Kelly, I’m all about hardwood for kitchen flooring regardless of the color. It is so much easier on the back than tile. It also gives a little when babies/toddlers take a tumble.
