Our guest post this week comes from Stylish Patina customer and fellow blogger, Emily of the blog Ask for Roses. She’s sharing a fab furniture refresh she did on a dresser using French Linen and Old White – and a little Gilding Wax too. Take it away, Emily!

Hi, I’m Emily, a Mississippi native currently living in Washington, D.C. and working on Capitol Hill. Although my day-to-day life revolves around politics, I satisfy my creative side by revamping furniture at night.  I blog about my furniture transformations at www.askforroses.com.

I had a dresser that was painted with standard latex that was peeling and showing wear and tear. I wanted to freshen it up and make it fit in better with my current decor. Here is the dresser before I refreshed it.

Here are my step by step instructions for this dresser:

1. I did this project indoors – partly in my kitchen and partly in my bedroom. For this project I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in French Linen, Old White and Louie Blue, Annie Sloan’s clear and dark wax, frog tape to add a second tone and Gilding Wax in Empire Gold. First, I applied the first coat of French Linen.

2. This lovely dresser had some really fun curves and lines so I decided to use a little bit of Old White to highlight some of its features. My first attempt at free handing turned out horribly so I jumped on my bike, rode to the hardware store and picked up a role of Frog Tape. I love Frog Tape because it does not let the paint bleed through which was important for me because Chalk Paint is thick and I was doing multiple coats.

3. I applied two coats of French Linen and two coats of Old White on the borders.

4. I painted the insides and sides of the drawers Louie Blue for a fun Pop of Color. I also applied these lovely scented drawers liners I found while shopping on the Eastern Shore.

5. I lightly distressed the dresser (mainly along the edges) and used a bit of dark wax on the Old White portion and intermittently on the top, sides and drawer fronts – enough to give it an aged look but not make it too dark.

6. The final touch was a bit of gilding wax in Empire Gold.

And here is the finished product!

Thanks to a little elbow grease, some Chalk Paint and dedication I now have a much more sophisticated bedroom that truly reflects my taste without purchasing anything new.

Thank you so much to Emily for sharing her amazing dresser refresh!

You can purchase chalk paint and supplies here and find “raw” furniture at our June Rough Luxe Market.

We would love to hear about your projects – email us your story with photos to press@stlyishpatina.com.
