This is an older post but one that lots of folks ask about — painted kitchen cabinets with Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan.  Yes it’s this easy!!!

If you hate your kitchen cabinets but don’t want to spend the money to replace them then this is the post for you!  “N” who lives in Del Ray Alexandria just hated her kitchen cabinets so we decided to refresh them with a little Old White Paint from Annie Sloan! This project isn’t hard but it does take time:-)  Here is a before picture:

Before Cabinets

As always I got excited and started painting and ALMOST forgot to take this picture…so typical of me!

– First we applied 2 sometimes 3 layers of Old White Chalk Paint.

– Then we waxed with clear wax.

– Finally we distressed with 150 grit sand paper.  After distressing you can add another bit of wax if you want .

It turned out wonderfully!  “N” did the majority of the work herself, I just got her started.

Now this couple has a wonderful Irish Country Kitchen so her Irish husband can make his Mummy’s famous Drunken Irish Soda Bread!  We have included the yummy recipe after the pictures for all you readers to enjoy!

And here are the results!  Of course I had to add in a few wonderful pictures of other furnishings in her kitchen that I just adored:-)

Mummy’s Drunken Irish Soda Bread

4 cups of flour. (you can decide if you want all white, all brown, half and half (works best), whatever combo you want)

1 teaspoon of baking soda put through a sieve

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon sour cream
1 cup Guinness or other flavored ale. (Fat Tire worked great)
1 tablespoon sunflower oil
– Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
– Mix the flour in a large, wide mixing bowl, then add the salt and bicarbonate of soda
– You want to make sure to get the sour cream through the buttermilk, so a quick whisk will do that.
– Make a well in the center of all the dry ingredients and pour all the wet ingredients in.
– With you fingers outstretched like a claw (or for the non authentic experience use a wooden spoon ), stir in a circular movement from the center to the outside of the bowl in ever increasing concentric circles.
– When you reach the outside of the bowl, the dough is made. This is NOT a yeast bread, so gentle mixing is all that is required, basically mix until dry ingredients are wet through.
– A kitchen mixer should definitely be avoided.
– Sprinkle a little flour onto counter-top or baking pan (for one surface less to wash). Wash and dry your hands to make it easier to handle the dough.
– Gently roll the ball of dough tucking the edges under with your hands. With your fingers, flatten the ball into a round loaf about 1.5 to 2 inches thick.
– Cut a deep cross into the bread (this is called ‘blessing the bread’) and poke a hole into each of the four sections. This is called “letting out the fairies” — which allows the heat to penetrate more evenly.
– Bake for 10 minutes, then turn the heat down to 350 degrees for another 30 minutes cooking.
– Then turn the bread upside down and cook for a further 10-20 minutes, until cooked (The bottom should sound hollow when tapped). Leave to cool on a wire rack wrapped in a tea towel, or if you cant wait feel free to eat while hot, using plenty of Kerrygold Salted Irish Butter
Feel free to add 1/4 inch cubes cubes of real cheddar cheese (Dubliner Irish Cheese is great) into dough for an interesting cheesy change, also maybe add a 1/4 cup of nuts of your liking to the dough. Make sure you add a little more liquid to make up for the extra volume. If you want to avoid the drunken flavor (you’ll never taste strong Guinness, gets baked out), just double up on the buttermilk.
***The most important thing to remember is that this is a simple 2:1 bread mix.
– That’s 2 parts dry to 1 part wet.
– Feel free to experiment. Cooking bread is fun and can be really quick.
– Try not to eat your fingers.

Wow! These look great! I’m getting ready to start my cabinet makeover. Trying to decide if I want to go distressed with ASCP or use an oil based semi-gloss. How many quarts of chalk paint did you use? And how’s the durability?

Hoping to get an answer on this older post here, but was curious as to how it’s holding up? I have a LOT of cabinets and would really rather not have to sand and prime everything so am thinking of going with chalk paint but would like to hear from someone that’s had it for a while as to it’s durability. High use kitchen here. Thanks if anyone is paying attention still!!
