This week’s before & after comes from Mary Spence Smith, a Stylish Patina customer. Take it away Mary!
“I live in Oakton, Virginia with my husband and my dog, Abby. I love cooking, reading, tennis, my amazing girlfriends, hanging out with my boys and a good DIY project,” says Mary.
“I love a good project. I have never liked my china cabinet (which predates me in my 30 year marriage) but I couldn’t justify ditching it for a new one. Then I discovered Annie Sloan Paint at Stylish Patina.”
Here’s a before shot of Mary’s cabinet.
“My husband and I own Bullseye Wood Specialties, a custom cabinetry shop, so I admit that I had help in this restoration. My carpenter made new soft close drawers for me and new doors. We put mirror in the back of the cabinet to bounce light. We used Annie Sloan Old Ochre and left the top of the lower portion in the dark cherry to match my table. Italian-made hardware topped it off. I now adore this piece. Thank you Annie Sloan and Stylish Patina for providing the inspiration!” says Mary.
And here is the gorgeous after of Mary’s cabinet – it looks so good & we’re loving that you installed soft close drawers.

Wow, what a difference. This piece is amazing.
Thanks, Marty. The transformation even exceeded my expectations!
Gorgeous now! I always cringe when someone wants to paint an antique piece, but this is an exception. It certainly is more with the times and something I would like in my home if I had more room.
Thank you Colleen. I know what you mean. So many people hesitate to paint over good, solid cherry wood furniture but I just had to do it. I have since replaced my outdated cherry headboard (it’s on Craig’s list) which also predated me in my 30 year+ marriage (!!!) with a grey linen upholstered headboard with silver nail head trim. I got it for pittance on One Kings Lane. So guess what I just painted last weekend? My two old school cherry with brass hardware nightstands. I used Paris Grey with Old White on the drawer fronts. I’m waiting for my new decorative hardware to arrive so I can take “After” photos.
This piece is amazing. I too have a cherry piece almost identical, BUT., I don’t believe I am that brave to try such a project.
So beautiful ! Did you use clear wax over this piece?
yes clear wax was applied!
I have the same exact piece! It looks like the glass
Doors were changed too. I live one state over in Maryland. Do you have step-by-step of what was done? Thanks.
Beautiful! I just bought a similar piece inspired by you. What color paint and finish did you use? Do you sell these? Thank you.
Can you please give the steps and colors you used? TIA
I plan to do this to my mahogany hutch. Any tips on how to prep the surface? Do I have to sand?
I just came across your website after seeing pics on Pinterest. I love LOVE your china cabinet. I have a very similar one by Ethan Allen and am inspired by the way yours turned out. Did you do any pre-paint prep? How many coats did you need to do? And was the mirror back (which looks great by the way) done in place with a large sheet of mirror or several sheets or squares? Thanks!
I have a similar piece that I’m planning to paint, I’m wondering how you were able to paint the thin detail pieces on the glass, did you remove the glass?
