I found this quote online, most likely on pinterest (love that thing!).
When it comes to design I think my strength is in taking a bunch of things that people love and make them work in their home or office. When I get ready for a barn sale or set the shop I don’t draw everything thing out and then go and buy..I do the reverse. I buy things I think are interesting and unique and then pull them all together.
It’s the same concept when I work with a new client. My goal is to understand what they want the space the feel like and how they plan on living in it. Obviously I do draw out the layout of the main room, etc, but most important I want to bring in meaningful pieces into the house to give it character and personalize the space.
I do go out and buy after the base is pulled together, I call this buying the “fluff”. This approach is why no space I design will look like it came out of a Pottery Barn, West Elm, Ballard Design or Wisteria magazine:-) I believe true design is unique and one-of-a-kind, I’m sure this is why I love vintage and transforming furniture…it adds a custom feel to each space.
In each of you is a designer (for your own spaces), sometimes we just need some help bringing it to the surface.
It’s so funny you posted this quote! I came across it this morning while redoing my chalkboard for the month. Love it! And I couldn’t agree more with personalizing spaces and filling them with character! It’s how we should all be surrounded in our homes.
Hi, Kelly
Great advise and I love the quote too.
