This week’s before and after is the story of an antique hutch that desperately needed a makeover. Stylish Patina reader Janet owned this piece, tried desperately to get rid of it, and then finally decided with a little updating, she could make it work in her home. Take it away, Janet!

“I was based out of Fort Lauderdale, as a Flight Attendant, but commuted from DCA. All that time away from home was sometimes frustrating because I was in a new relationship and was so anxious to make “his” house, “our” home. Now that I’m retired, my ideas are finally able to come to fruition. I would like to think that I have good ideas for decorating but was finding it challenging to work with all of my new husband’s dark furniture.”

“And then I met Annie Sloan Chalk Paint! I became so excited that I warned Greg if he remained still for too long, he would also get painted. He is a retired Colonel and at first I wasn’t so sure he would hand over his entire house to my whims. He has done just that, though, and after the very first project, he trusts my decorating judgment. I now have the perfect husband and home! Thank you, Stylish Patina and Annie Sloan!”

Here is a before picture of Janet’s buffet.

“I purchased this dinning room buffet as a quick fix for a place I lived in that needed more counter and storage space in the kitchen. To me it became a dark eyesore. Trying desperately to sell it on Craig’s List, to no avail, I had Greg take the top off and painted two coats of Old Ochre topping it with clear and then dark wax. I decided to paint the interior as well, since I knew I wanted to use it often. At the last minute I even painted a free hand “B” for my new last name.”

Here is the transformation of Janet’s buffet.

Your dining room is gorgeous! The new vintage piece is really beautiful, I wish you left the back panel, added a mirror and left the tier to decorate.
